Intro
Why, hello there my fellow misfits, mavericks & misanthropes…
And welcome to Thinking Out Loud… a newsletter with no real publishing schedule, nor a particularly unifying theme. I write whatever I want, whenever I want, and just hope you stick around for the ride.
On today’s podcast episode, I kind of rant a little about society.
This seems to be a common theme of mine at the moment, but please bear with me as I bash out this point as often as possible, in an effort to articulate it as concisely as possible.
This may require multiple attempts.
If the podcast is a bit ‘too long; didn’t listen’, read on for the general idea (in 500 words or less).
TL;DL
Looking back as recently as twenty to fifty years ago, one could say that access to information was extremely limited (especially when compared to today’s standards).
One could, therefore, reasonably assume that our knowledge regarding aspects of reality, as well as our ability to reason effectively, was also significantly impaired as a result.
Additionally, one would think, since we now have unlimited access to information – whatever we may need to know, whenever we may need to know it – that our knowledge and understanding of the world must have drastically improved as a result, right?
Yet, shockingly, this doesn’t seem to be the case.
We are now overwhelmed with information, and it has actually become increasingly more difficult to determine who can really be trusted.
So, although it is easier than ever to simply Google what we need to know, it is also now much harder to identify the most trustworthy source of information on which we can rely.
As I previously discussed, another obstacle getting in our way is the fact that the status quo does not take kindly to being challenged:
At the end of the day, our relationship with knowledge, discovering the truth and doing the hard work of aligning our beliefs with both our understanding of reality as well as how we interact with the world, is not as healthy as it should be.
Despite being in a better position to acquire knowledge than any other time in the history of the world, finding the right information to rely on is more difficult than ever. And, as the pace of our lives continues to accelerate at a speed with which we are incapable of keeping up, it can seem impossible to sift through it all in an effort to discover the truth.
No wonder most of us simply revert to the status quo position, follow a particular crowd (without doing the proper due diligence ourselves) and focus only on that which simply confirms our firmly held biases.
This is the easy and comfortable road…
But it is also a poor pathway to truth.
